Concrete Molds Are Increasingly Popular
With on-going advancements in technology, new materials have been developed for making concrete molds. This being fact, the material you select for your molds depends on both the nature and size of the concrete project you have planned. No two concrete projects are alike and what works greatly for one will not necessarily work well for another.
Latex molds for example have become immensely popular simply because it’s so incredibly easy to use. There’s no mixing involved, and there’s no special preparation involved. In fact, the latex you buy is ready to use immediately, and this is why it’s the option of choice for so many people. However, if you’re an impatient person, then it may not be the ideal choice for you, considering that it generally takes a relatively long time to set. In other words, if you’re using latex for your molds then you’ll need to make the mold a day or two before you intend using it. Something else which is worthwhile noting is that latex molds have a tendency to shrink. Even though the amount of shrinkage is negligible, it may pose to be a problem depending on your personal requirements, and what you intend using the mold for.
Polysulfide rubber is the second most popular concrete molding material. It typically comes in 2 parts that need to be mixed… but it is highly durable. Additionally, the material is pretty stretchy. The major downside to polysulfide rubber is that it has an unpleasant odor (it smells pretty bad); however it does not smell nearly as bad as, let’s say asphalt and its durability has won it popular usage as a concrete mold.
Of course, there are times when you would be better off using timber, or even steel to making concrete molds, but again, it all boils down to what you intend making. Generally speaking however, latex and polysulfide rubber are undoubtedly the most popular materials being used nowadays. Not only are they both very versatile, but they’re also very affordable.
My intent in this article was to show you the materials that are currently most popular for making concrete molds. Please do some research to make sure that you choose the best material for your particular concrete application. There is no “one size fits all” in concrete construction and most assumptions made will cost you time and money
