Getting Your Veg Plot Off To The Best Possible Start

Ok, so having located a suitable location for your veg plot, the very first thing you must do is PREPARE THE SOIL. This is the most important step of all, poor preparation here and your crops have already started off badly!! basic equipment you will need is a spade and a fork, make sure these are comfortable as you are going to become very old friends!in addition you may want to hire or purchase a rotovator.

To prepare the soil you will need to dig it over and over… and over. Removing all roots and weeds as you go, once dug over, start digging in well rotted manure and compost to help improve soil structure and drainage. To do this use a spade to break up and turn over the soil, working in a staedy and methodical way, I tend to work from side to side in rows from one end of the plot to the other. once you have dug over your plot with a spade you can then switch to a fork and, Yep… Start all over again. (This is where the benifits of a Rotovator come in)

If it is a large area you may want to consider a Rotovator or tiller, there are both electric and petrol versions available and most hire centres have some to choose from if you don’t want to splash out on one yourself. These work by using a series of rotors or blades to slice the soil up, constantly churning and breaking down the large clods of earth into finer soil. The level of work required to use a rotovator as opposed to working the soil by hand, just does not compare, your back will thankyou for it every time you use it. But as the saying goes… Hard work won’t kill you… It just makes you a funny shape!!

A rotovator will speed the whole preparation process up no end, If you are serious about growing your own you should really consider investing in one! addional attachments can be sourced for most petrol versions to make more earth based jobs easier and quicker, for example blades that slice weeds off and act as a hoe allowing you to keep rows neat and tidy with minimal effort.

Once you have dug over or used a Rotavator on your plot, you should be left with soft crumbly soil that can be raked over and finished to leave a fine and weed free patch of soil, perfect for sowing your seeds or planting out larger plants, Your reward for all your hard work at this stage will be paid many times over during your growing season and of course when you gather your crops at harvest.
