Over the past few years we have observed vegetable gardening growing in number throughout the country. What’s the main reason veggie gardening is becoming so popular these days?
From what I’ve seen it’s due to the same issues that started us vegetable gardening, to save money on the groceries. The lack of job security, rising prices and no raises at work as well as a economic downturn that simply will not disappear is a great incentive to start digging your first veggie garden.
As a family feeling the economic pinch, like so many others, we made the decision to try our hand at vegetable gardening as one way to save money. It worked, we spent less money on produce and discovered gardening to be extremely fulfilling in addition to rewarding.
We Were Surprises We Did So Well Growing Veggies
As a kid growing up on a farm we had a huge garden which required weeding, Dad got to use the hoe while we kids had to crawl around weeding by hand. Of course weeding was a chore I didn’t care much for. These days I’m the dad and get to use the hoe, the same way Dad did.

Give Indoor Herb Gardening A Try
Our first gardening season was over all too fast. It was going to be months before I could start a new garden. So, I decided it would be interesting to try my hand at growing a few kitchen herbs right in the kitchen.
To our great delight growing a kitchen herb garden on a windowsill in our kitchen was much easier than we thought. It’s great having a fresh supply of the herbs we like the most.
Vegetables Are Tastier, Healthier And Less Expensive To Grow Organically
It’s really a miracle we survived growing up with all the chemicals that were sprayed on our garden vegetables. These days I actually grow veggies without chemicals.
Our soil here is dense clay that doesn’t drain well at all so we add our own compost, straight from our compost bin and also peatmoss to loosen the soil. Doing this assists in growing healthy root systems for our veggies and allows water to drain quicker than it ever did when it was just dense clay.
In Conclusion
If you haven’t tried vegetable gardening yet it’s a great way to save a bit of money on that grocery bill. It all helps and you may just find you have a new hobby as well.
