How to Clear Clogged Drains ?

As the pool of water collects around the drain, you get a sinking feeling in your stomach. You dread another costly visit from the plumber. However, clogged drains, while inconvenient and messy, are usually easy enough to correct on your own. Here are some tips that you can use when trying to solve various types of drain problems.

If you notice that only one fixture is backing up, be it the kitchen sink, bathroom tub or the toilet, its an indication that the clog is in the trap of that particular fixture only and you can very easily unclog it. And if water is backing up at more than one fixture, then there might be some problem in the main drain.

There are various solutions to this problem. An easy one is to use a chemical drain cleaner. But you should always read the instructions mentioned on it before use as these chemicals can be harmful. You must always take all the necessary precautions while dealing with them.

The drain cleaner used should be safe for your septic system also, otherwise they can destroy the bacteria there and the entire process will be ended. Once you have used the chemical, make sure that you put plenty of water to remove the chemicals from the pipe.

Apart from chemicals, one of the most trusted tools for unclogging drains, the plunger, can usually clear the blockage if it’s not too far into the main drain. Follow these tips to make plunging more effective.

You first need to block all the holes and other drains by putting in some cloth or other stuff. Next put some water over the drain as it will help to push the clog out more quickly and the plunger would work more smoothly with it.

You can also apply petroleum jelly on the rim of the plunger. This will help to remove the clog with a greater force. Move the plunger in the downward direction several times. Continue this for at least 2 minutes. Then if the water starts flowing out with normal speed, it means the clog has been removed, else, try plunging again. When cleared, pour hot water to remove any left over particles.

You can always use strainers for your kitchen and bathroom sinks to prevent the entry of materials like hair, soap, pins and other insoluble objects. This way you can prevent clogging up of your drains.
