How To Go About Planting Grass Seed

Planting grass seed is more like planting a rose in a woman’s palm, everything just needs to be right. And even though it can present itself as a serious challenge for say, an astronaut, such inexperience is not a stumbling block. When all is said and done it all boils down to the basics of the surrounding environment; soil structure and texture; the right weather; supervision and watering. But simply going straight to the Seedcorp and planting the grass seed with no core information would be like going to a football derby with no voice. So to make it easier I have outlined some useful tips on planting grass seed.

The physical conditions existing in the chosen area must not be overlooked. If conditions are not favourable with your plans it’s best to shift plans. Some prevalent conditions would be: the amount of sun that reaches the area; whether there is a lot of shade or whether it’s your children’s play area. When it’s too hot then you would have to choose a heat tolerant variety. This information will be of great use when you want to choose the type of grass to plant.

With that determined it’s serious business all the way. Till the soil with any implement that goes reasonably deep enough to uproot weeds and expose dormant pests. Then go on to apply herbicides to ensure that all weeds die and your grass is left with all the nutrients to itself. Remember to water the area a day before tilling so that you maintain a good soil structure that will be destroyed if tilled dry. Stones and sticks will also have to be removed in the same process during raking.

A soil test is what you’d have to carry out to establish what the pH is (acidic or alkaline) and what type of nutrients are lacking for effective grass growth. Nitrogen deficiency will lead to stunted growth of the lawn and a potassium deficiency will result in yellowy and pale looking grass. Just take random soil samples and take them to an expert, it won’t cost you a lot but it will help you achieve your desired lawn.

Planting the grass seed is the next step. For this you can use a mechanical planter or your bare hands. When using bare hands be careful not to apply too much in some areas and too little in others. Apply seed properly and rake the seeds under the soil, but not too deep into the ground. Light watering should be immediately after planting and consistently afterwards; be cautious not to dislodge any seeds.

With the heap of the work done all you’ll have to do is keep watering the area and monitoring growth. If the germination is uneven then all you have to do is sow some more seeds.

Good Luck.
