How To Grow Great Tomatoes
The tomato plant is one of the first plants that any young gardener learns how to take care of. Growing them is fairly easy, but even the most seasoned gardener knows that plants can die without the proper care, just like any other living thing. Taking care of your plants and making sure that they receive adequate amounts of nutrients, water, and sun is crucial to having a productive garden.
If you’re buying tomato plants that have already been planted into containers, you need to transplant these into larger containers or into the ground. Plant them deep so that they will have a strong root system, which allows the plant to gather more nutrients than those that have lesser root systems. This will also help the plant continue to stand under its own weight later in the life cycle.
The amount of water that you give your plants and the time of day that you water them can have a serious effect on their lifespan and productivity. Never water your plants when they are in the hot afternoon sun, because this can scald the leaves and kill them. Plants appearing wilted in the afternoon sun is normal, however wilted plants in the morning is a sign of dehydration. You also want to avoid watering your plants too much; if there is standing water left in the pot after watering them, you have watered too much. Always make sure your containers have drains in them so the excess water can drain out.
Something else that you can do to help provide your tomatoes with the nutrients that they need is with something you probably throw away regularly. Egg shells contain calcium and have been used by gardeners of years to feed plants and keep a number of pests out of the garden. Slugs and snails don’t stick around too long because of the edges of the shells. That is, of course, as long as you don’t grind the shells up too fine before putting them in the soil.
Finally, you should remember to make sure that your tomato plants are in containers that are large enough to support their mature root systems once they are fully grown. Having a container that is too small can stunt their growth and prevent them from producing the maximum amount of tomatoes that they are capable of. If you are able, the best thing that you can do is put your tomato plants into a raised garden bed. This gives you complete control over what type of soil your plants grow in and rest assured, they will be much happier and produce much more fruit.
