How To Make Your Own Compost

Home composting is undoubtedly one of the best things a home owner can do for the environment, it is also one of the easiest. Compost has been defined as a mixture of decaying organic matter, as from leaves and manure, used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients, and learning how to compost is simply becoming aware of ways to hasten the natural biological process which reduces organic waste to the point where it can no longer be broken down. This can be a fast way to improve soil and bring back the nutrients, moisture and air for the growth of the homeowners’ healthy vegetables and flowers.

It is easy to learn how to compost. Almost anything can be thrown into the compost bin except human, dog and cat waste. Greens and browns is the mixture that should be added to the bin. Browns are the carbon-rich ingredients like leaves, shredded papers, branches, twigs, and hay. Greens are ingredients with nitrogen, such as lawn clippings, manure, fruits, vegetables, and many other items.. Browns are usually bulky and promote aerations while the green items will produce lots of moisture through out the pile.

Learning to compost is basically knowing what to put in the pile and knowing how to mix it to produce good compost quickly.

When making compost having air circulation is critical so having holes on the compost bin is ideal. A compost pile on the ground needs to be turned or stirred at least once a week to provide the air that microbes require to survive and to stop organisms from dominating the pile and making it smell. The compost also needs enough water to keep it about as damp as a wrung-out sponge.

Composting might not completely restore the soil, but no doubt about it, it will balance and bring back much needed nutrients back to your garden. So why not recycle some of that waste and keep it out of our landfills and help out our plant.
