Recycling Garden Water
The conservation of water is becoming vital to the survival of any living creature on this earth. Water continues to increase in price every year. Reducing the amount of used water in a garden is easy and affordable.
Mulch maintains the quality of many plants. Slowing the process of evaporation helps nourish the soil longer. Grass trimmings, fallen leaves and bark can be spread around the bottom of plants and throughout flower beds to cover all open soil. Finding organic matter to cover soil can be done by searching around a yard or purchasing mulch from a nursery.
Save water by choosing plants that require little water. Indigenous plants that easily adapt to current environments are easier to maintain. They are suited to, for example winter rainfall areas, and won’t need much watering in summer, and vice versa. Saving water can create a more inviting garden to animals.
Slowly eliminating ‘foreign’ or invader plant species will also cut down on watering. Foreign plants need an adequate amount of water to survive. This often means they leech water from surrounding plants, killing them off. Foreign plants are able to ruin a garden by killing other plants by sucking out their nutrients. Exotic plants should be replaced with local plants.
Water the same time everyday. The chance of evaporation of water is reduced when gardens are watered without the sun present. Watering in the evening reduces the amount of burnt leaves and grass. In winter, water the garden early in the morning so that the water has been absorbed before cold night time temperatures freeze the water and the plants’ roots, killing them. Saving water through irrigation systems is important to reduce water waste. Set a timer to save water in rainy seasons.
Consider investing in a water tank to collect rainwater all year round for watering the garden and filling the swimming pool. Also recycle water through the utilization of grey water systems. Decreasing water consumption can be achieved by using outdoor water on indoor plants.
Reducing water consumption in a garden is the easiest task in preserving water. Following these new techniques can significantly change the amount of money spent on utilities each month.
