There Is Beauty In Japanese Bonsai

The gardening technique and art form that we know today as “bonsai” was believed to have originated in China in the 3rd century during the Chin Dynasty. The art spread to Japan during the T’ang Dynasty in the 7th century. In China, the term “pen-t’sai” was used to describe the creation of miniature landscapes using trees and rocks. The Japanese transliterated the term pen-t’sai into “bonsai”, which is translated to mean “planted in a small basin”. It was the Japanese who are credited with developing bonsai as a fine art form.

When you combine artistic expression with a talent for cultivating plants and trees you get Japanese bonsai. It is the process of discovering the true essence of trees, rocks, and soil, and reproducing them in miniature, giving the appearance of a mature landscape that is accurately and artistically reproduced, and fitting it all into a small pot.

For many, bonsai is more than simply mastering the technical gardening aspects of the hobby. It can become a time of quiet meditation and contemplation. It is an escape from the daily grind. It is certainly an opportunity to connect with nature.

On the one hand, then, the practice of bonsai may be an expression of this philosophy of universal oneness. It can also be an opportunity to express your personal interpretation of your relationship with nature.

The creation of beautiful bonsai will, of course, require the application of well-honed gardening techniques, and a knowledge of plant physiology. The gardening knowledge and skills for bonsai can be learned quickly, but they will be perfected over a lifetime. If you take the time to learn the gardening skills, and understand how plants grow and how to care for them, then one day you will be able to look upon your work and know that you have created a real bonsai. Congratulations.

The hobby of Japanese bonsai continues to grow in popularity. The variety and beauty of bonsai plants is remarkable. It is a great feeling to create your own bonsai and then to have it admired by others. Everyone should try to create a bonsai – there is much to be learned by doing so. It can be a life-changing experience.
